The Legend of the Quatuor Coronati:
The Quartet were originally four craftsmen called Claudius, Castorius, Simphorianus, and Nicostratus, of the "mirificos in arte quadrataria," which can be translated by "art of carving". In 298 the Diocletian Emperor built baths on the hills of Quirinal and of Virminal this unit envisaged also a temple dedicated toÆsculapius, the god of health. Five sculptors, Claudius, Nicostratus, Sinforianus, Castorinus, and Simplicius were asked to carry out the statue of Esculape. Being Christian they refused to make the statue of a pagan god, and consequently they were condamned to death. Three were beheaded and two were scourged to death. Other artists were found who carried out work. With the return of Diocletian in Rome in 300, finding the work completed he decided to dedicate the Temple in the presence of all the army. Each one was to launch incense on the altar. Four brothers, who were Master masons and chiefs of the civil militia refused to take part to this pagan ceremony. These four Brothers were called Severus, Severianus, Carporferus, and Victorianus. The emperor ordered them either to sacrifice or suffer death. They, steadfast to their faith, suffered death by being scourged with leaden thongs. Their bodies were then enclosed in leaden cases and thrown into the river Tiber.
